Waiting on Wednesday [50]

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly awaiting.

There are so many books I’m excited about, so I’ll definitely keep doing Waiting on Wednesday. With that said, here’s my pick that I can’t wait for.

Title: Mask of Shadows
Author: Linsey Miller
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Publication date: August 29, 2017
Summary (via Goodreads): Sallot Leon is a thief, and a good one at that. But gender fluid Sal wants nothing more than to escape the drudgery of life as a highway robber and get closer to the upper-class and the nobles who destroyed their home.

When Sal Leon steals a poster announcing open auditions for the Left Hand, a powerful collection of the Queen’s personal assassins named for the rings she wears — Ruby, Emerald, Amethyst, and Opal — their world changes. They know it’s a chance for a new life.

Except the audition is a fight to the death filled with clever circus acrobats, lethal apothecaries, and vicious ex-soldiers. A childhood as a common criminal hardly prepared Sal for the trials. But Sal must survive to put their real reason for auditioning into play: revenge.

Why I Chose This Book:

This one sounds really interesting. I haven’t really read assassin books besides Throne of Glass, so it’ll be interesting to see another author’s writing. I got an eARC from Netgalley, and then was asked to audition for The Queen’s Left Hand. So that’s been a fun weekly activity to help promote Linsey’s book. I’m planning on reading this one really soon for #TheReadingQuest challenge as my book with a weapon on its cover.

Girl in Pieces

Title: Girl in Pieces
Author: Kathleen Glasgow
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Publication date: August 30, 2016
Summary (via Goodreads): For fans of Girl, Interrupted, Thirteen Reasons Why, and All the Bright Places comes Kathleen Glasgow’s debut novel about a girl who has lost everything—almost even herself.

Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At seventeen she’s already lost more than most people lose in a lifetime. But she’s learned how to forget. The thick glass of a mason jar cuts deep, and the pain washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don’t have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you.

Every new scar hardens Charlie’s heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.

A deeply moving portrait of a teenage girl on the verge of losing herself and the journey she must take to survive in her own skin, Kathleen Glasgow’s debut is heartbreakingly real and unflinchingly honest. It’s a story you won’t be able to look away from.

Why I Chose This Book:

This sounds incredible, and kind of dark, which I don’t mind in the slightest. I’ll be reading and reviewing this for Sunday Street Team, so I can’t wait to get my hands on the eARC soon. I think it’ll be fantastic…especially given the 4-5 star reviews it’s gotten so far!

Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit

Title: Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit
Author: Jaye Robin Brown
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication date: August 30, 2016
Summary (via Goodreads): Joanna Gordon has been out and proud for years, but when her popular radio evangelist father remarries and decides to move all three of them from Atlanta to the more conservative Rome, Georgia, he asks Jo to do the impossible: to lie low for the rest of her senior year. And Jo reluctantly agrees.

Although it is (mostly) much easier for Jo to fit in as a straight girl, things get complicated when she meets Mary Carlson, the oh-so-tempting sister of her new friend at school. But Jo couldn’t possibly think of breaking her promise to her dad. Even if she’s starting to fall for the girl. Even if there’s a chance Mary Carlson might be interested in her, too. Right?

Why I Chose This Book:

This book sounds really good, and I’m always looking for new LGBTQIA+ books to add to my TBR. The cover is simple, but it really pops. It’s the first thing that caught my eye. Then I read the description, and knew I couldn’t wait to read this one.

But Henrietta Howel is not the chosen one.
As she plays a dangerous game of deception, she discovers that the sorcerers have their own secrets to protect. With battle looming, what does it mean to not be the one? And how much will she risk to save the city—and the one she loves?

Exhilarating and gripping, Jessica Cluess’s spellbinding fantasy introduces a powerful, unforgettably heroine, and a world filled with magic, romance, and betrayal. Hand to fans of Libba Bray, Sarah J. Maas, and Cassandra Clare.

Why I Chose This Book:

This book sounds amazing. I’ve seen so many people dying (metaphorically, not literally) to get their hands on it. I pre-ordered a copy over two weeks ago, and then I received Netgalley approval last week. I’m so excited to read this book!

The first of two books.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. Author: Kathryn Holmes
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication date: June 14, 2016
Summary (via Goodreads): The movement is all that matters.

For as long as Samantha can remember, she’s wanted to be a professional ballerina. She’s lived for perfect pirouettes, sky-high extensions, and soaring leaps across the stage. Then her body betrayed her.

The change was gradual. Stealthy.

Failed diets. Disapproving looks. Whispers behind her back. The result: crippling anxiety about her appearance, which threatens to crush her dancing dreams entirely. On her dance teacher’s recommendation, Sam is sent to a summer treatment camp for teen artists and athletes who are struggling with mental and emotional obstacles. If she can make progress, she’ll be allowed to attend a crucial ballet intensive. But when asked to open up about her deepest insecurities, secret behaviors, and paralyzing fears to complete strangers, Sam can’t cope.

What I really need is a whole new body.

Sam forms an unlikely bond with Andrew, a former college football player who’s one of her camp counselors. As they grow closer, Andrew helps Sam see herself as he does—beautiful. But just as she starts to believe that there’s more between them than friendship, disappointing news from home sends her into a tailspin. The Way to Game the Walk of Shame

Title: The Way to Game the Walk of Shame
Author: Jenn P. Nguyen
Publisher: Macmillan/Swoon Reads
Publication date: June 7, 2016
Summary (via Goodreads): Taylor Simmons is screwed.

Things were hard enough when her single-minded dedication to her studies earned her the reputation of being an Ice Queen, but after getting drunk at a party and waking up next to bad boy surfer Evan McKinley, the entire school seems intent on tearing Taylor down with mockery and gossip.

Desperate to salvage her reputation, Taylor persuades Evan to pretend they’re in a serious romantic relationship. After all, it’s better to be the girl who tames the wild surfer than just another notch on his surfboard.

Why I Chose This Book:

This sounds like it could be an interesting contemporary romance read. I love the simplistic yet beautiful cover, and the title is a good preview of what’s to come in the book. I can’t wait to see what happens between Taylor and Evan, and what exactly caused them to end up waking next to each other.
