Waiting on Wednesday [53]

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly awaiting.

There are so many books I’m excited about, so I’ll definitely keep doing Waiting on Wednesday. With that said, here’s my pick that I can’t wait for.

Title: Warcross
Author: Marie Lu
Publisher: G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers
Publication date: September 12, 2017
Summary (via Goodreads): For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

Why I Chose This Book:

What I’ve already read from Marie Lu, I’ve really liked. And I’ve heard amazing things about this book from people who got ARCs, so that only increased my interest. I was a gamer in my teens, and I occasionally play nowadays. So gaming books are always a fun escape from reality. I can’t wait for this one to be released next week.

  1. I feel like this book was able to be made because of “Ready Player One”, which I haven’t read yet. They just both seem to both be part of a growing niche within YA and books in general that deal with gaming worlds as part of the story. Interesting. This does sound good and I can see why you are waiting for it.

  2. I can’t make up my mind whether or not I want to read this. Isn’t that strange? Usually I know immediately which way I want to go but not in this case. I think because everyone else wants to read it, it makes me think it’s something worth reading. However, it doesn’t feel like a go to read for me normally. Hope you love it when you get it though.
